Introduction

On the 26th of June 2024, the Health Advocate Frontline Team (HAFT-UG) conducted a health education talk at Nyantungo Church. The primary objective of the session was to raise community awareness regarding domestic violence, hygiene practices, and nutritional standards. The session was led by Rauben Tumuhimbise, the HAFT Coordinator, who provided expert guidance and insights to all participants.

Key Discussion Areas

1. Domestic Violence Awareness

The presentation highlighted the critical need for community members to recognise early signs of domestic violence and understand its broader impact on family dynamics. Key strategies for prevention and the legal avenues available for seeking help through community support and legal protections were discussed.

2. Hygiene and Sanitation

This segment focused on the vital role of hygiene in preventing the spread of diseases within communal and household settings. Participants received practical instructions on:

  • Effective handwashing techniques.
  • Proper sanitation of living spaces.
  • Safe handling of food to mitigate health risks.

3. Nutritional Guidance

The speaker emphasised the connection between balanced nutrition and long-term health. The session addressed:

  • Common nutritional deficiencies within the community.
  • The importance of consuming diverse food groups for optimal well-being.

Interactive Engagement

The session utilised a participatory approach, encouraging attendees to ask questions and share personal experiences. This interactive format facilitated a deeper understanding of the subject matter and encouraged active community engagement.

Conclusion and Recommendations

The health education talk was highly impactful, equipping attendees with the practical knowledge necessary to improve their lives and their communities.

To build on this success, the following actions are recommended:

  • Organise similar health education sessions on a regular basis to reinforce community knowledge.
  • Establish collaborations with local authorities and partner organisations to expand the reach and effectiveness of these initiatives.

Acknowledgements

We extend our sincere gratitude to Rauben Tumuhimbise and the entire HAFT-UG team for their commitment to health advocacy. We also thank Nyantungo Church for hosting the event and providing a supportive environment for learning.
