HAFT-UG Launches Free Menstrual Stigma Campaign at Fins Medical University

On 14th September 2024, HAFT-UG officially launched the Free Menstrual Stigma Campaign at Fins Medical University, uniting students, volunteers, community leaders and partners to advance menstrual health awareness across Uganda.

Advancing Menstrual Health Awareness in Uganda

On 14th September 2024, Health Advocates Frontline Team (HAFT-UG) officially launched the Free Menstrual Stigma Campaign at Fins Medical University. The event brought together students, volunteers, community leaders, and development partners to address menstrual stigma and promote menstrual health education.

Training Volunteers to Create Change

The campaign launch featured a comprehensive training session led by Tumuhimbise Rauben, Coordinator of HAFT-UG. The training covered how to make reusable sanitary pads, conducting effective health education talks, community engagement strategies, and addressing myths surrounding menstruation. Reusable pads were highlighted as a sustainable and affordable solution for girls who cannot regularly access disposable products.

Strong Community and Institutional Support

The campaign received support from representatives of ACORD-Uganda, HAFT-UG leadership, community mobilisers, and university participants. Special appreciation was extended to supporters who donated menstrual products to support girls in vulnerable communities. Women leaders also shared personal experiences about their first menstrual periods, helping normalise conversations around menstruation and reduce stigma.

Why This Campaign Matters

Menstrual stigma continues to affect thousands of girls across Uganda. Many young girls miss school during menstruation, lack access to sanitary products, face shame and discrimination, and have limited reproductive health education. Through awareness campaigns and practical support, HAFT-UG is helping communities understand that menstrual health is a human dignity issue.

Looking Ahead

The campaign launch marked the beginning of expanded outreach programmes, volunteer trainings, and partnerships with educational institutions. Future activities include community menstrual health camps, school outreach programmes, reusable pad workshops, and youth mentorship initiatives.

A Collective Effort for Change

The success of the launch demonstrated the importance of partnerships and community involvement in improving menstrual health outcomes. HAFT-UGANDA continues to advocate for healthier, informed, and stigma-free communities.
