Creating Safe Spaces for Menstrual Health Conversations
On 11th January 2025, a community menstrual health awareness session was held at St. Peter's Church of Uganda, Kyebando, organised by the Fathers Union in partnership with HAFT-UGANDA. The session welcomed women and girls, men and boys, parents and guardians, and community leaders.
Educating Communities About Menstrual Health
The awareness talk was led by Rauben, the HAFT Coordinator, who guided participants through menstrual cycle education, proper pad use and disposal, hygiene during menstruation, and emotional support and communication. The session encouraged participants to openly discuss menstruation and eliminate harmful stigma.
Demonstrating Proper Menstrual Hygiene
A practical demonstration showed participants how to wear sanitary pads correctly, safe disposal practices, and personal hygiene routines during menstruation. This hands-on approach helped improve understanding, especially for young girls approaching puberty.
Real Stories That Inspired Others
Women from the community shared their first menstruation experiences, helping younger girls realise they were not alone. These stories reduced fear and shame, encouraged openness, and fostered community support across all age groups.
Encouraging Male Involvement
An important part of the session was involving boys and men in menstrual health discussions. Their participation promoted respect and understanding, supportive family environments, and reduced discrimination against menstruating girls.
Building a Healthier Community
The event strengthened awareness and encouraged healthier conversations around menstruation within families and communities. Through education and dialogue, HAFT-UG continues to advocate for menstrual dignity and reproductive health education across Uganda.
