Community Menstrual Health Camp Empowers Families in Kagote

On 21st September 2024, HAFT-UG organised a Free Menstrual Stigma Campaign Camp in Kagote, Fort Portal, attracting 102 participants including 62 girls, parents, and boys for menstrual hygiene education and reusable pad training.

Promoting Open Conversations About Menstruation

On 21st September 2024, Health Advocates Frontline Team (HAFT-UG) organised a successful Free Menstrual Stigma Campaign Camp in Kagote, Fort Portal. The camp attracted 102 participants, including 62 girls, parents, boys and community members. The initiative focused on menstrual hygiene education, reusable pad training, and stigma reduction.

Reusable Pad Making Workshop

Participants received hands-on training in creating reusable sanitary pads from trained facilitators including Ongom Joseph, Mukibi Faruku, Marie, and Grace. The workshop emphasised sustainability, affordability, and accessibility for low-income families. Girls and parents learned practical skills that can reduce dependency on expensive disposable products.

Menstrual Health Education Sessions

Health educators Baluku Patrick and Kizito discussed the menstrual cycle, hygiene management, infection prevention, and emotional and physical well-being during menstruation. Open discussions helped participants ask questions freely and challenge long-standing myths surrounding menstruation.

Parents and Boys Included in the Conversation

One of the camp's most impactful elements was involving parents and boys in menstrual health discussions. This inclusive approach encouraged empathy and understanding, reduced stigma within families, and created stronger support systems for girls. Parents expressed gratitude for the knowledge gained and felt more prepared to support their children during puberty.

Community Impact and Continuing the Mission

The camp achieved positive outcomes including increased awareness of menstrual hygiene, improved confidence among girls, greater community acceptance of menstrual health discussions, and empowerment through practical reusable pad-making skills. HAFT-UG continues expanding menstrual health outreach programmes throughout Uganda to ensure that girls and women can manage menstruation safely, confidently, and with dignity.
