Cultivating Community Wellness Through Nutrition and Hygiene Education

HAFT-UG conducted a health education session in Mbale Nyaibara educating women and men on practical ways to improve community wellness through proper nutrition, balanced diets, food safety, hygiene, and safe drinking water practices.

Building Healthier Communities in Mbale Nyaibara

Health Advocates Frontline Team (HAFT-UG) recently conducted an impactful health education session in Mbale Nyaibara, focusing on the importance of nutrition and hygiene in improving community wellness. The session was led by Tumuhimbise Rauben, Coordinator of HAFT-Uganda, and aimed at educating both women and men on practical ways to live healthier lives.

Nutrition: The Foundation of Good Health

During the session, participants learned that nutrition is the foundation for physical growth and development, energy production, strong immunity, and disease prevention. The discussion emphasised the importance of eating balanced meals that include all major food groups including fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins and minerals, whole grains such as brown rice, oats, and millet for lasting energy, proteins from beans, fish, poultry, and groundnuts for muscle growth and repair, and dairy products for strong bones and healthy development.

Food Safety: From Market to Table

The training stressed that healthy eating also depends on how food is handled and prepared. Key food safety practices included washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, cooking food properly, refrigerating perishable foods promptly, and buying meat and fish from trusted sources. Participants learned that poor food handling can lead to infections and foodborne illnesses.

Hygiene as a Shield Against Disease

The session strongly emphasised hygiene practices including washing hands with soap before handling food, cleaning kitchen surfaces regularly, avoiding cross-contamination during cooking, and using clean utensils. These practices help reduce the spread of diseases and improve household health.

Importance of Safe Drinking Water

Participants were encouraged to drink enough clean water daily, boil drinking water when necessary, and store water safely to prevent contamination. Safe water practices are essential in preventing waterborne diseases within communities.

HAFT-UG's Mission for Community Health

HAFT-UGANDA remains committed to improving public health through community health education, menstrual health advocacy, disease prevention awareness, youth empowerment programmes, and hygiene and sanitation campaigns.
